OLD-SCHOOL EDITING SKILLS,
started my 25-year editing career as a newspaper copy editor, news editor, and page designer for two of Southern California's largest newspaper groups. That experience shaped who I am today. I took that experience and moved on to working for award-winning startup magazines in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties as an editor, designer, and social media specialist with the singular responsibility for helping those publications reach a more sophisticated editorial quality. Currently, I am the publications editor and social media coordinator in the communications department of an internationally recognized research institute in California. Fifteen years ago, I launched my side gig, Editing Matters, where I have had the pleasure of editing a wide variety of nonfiction books with first-time authors. It's been a genuine honor to worth with people who are as passionate about their projects as I am about editing them.
To me, editing is akin to straightening out crooked lines so readers have an effortless and joyful reading experience. Noticing details is my stock in trade, and my years working in newsrooms ensure I can handle intense deadline situations without breaking a sweat; my years working as a freelancer ensure that I can communicate well remotely.
I specialize in journalism and nonfiction—everything from the hard sciences to public policy, news, business, lifestyle, entertainment, and general-interest content. I am well-versed in the usual style guide suspects: AP and Chicago. I also develop house style guides for publications. I am at expert level in Photoshop, Acrobat, and InDesign. I am knowledgable in most social media platforms and analytics tools, and I'm proficient in several CMS applications. I am also a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and ACES, The Society for Editing.
I offer copy editing, line editing/structural editing, and proofreading for articles, blog posts, term papers, scripts, books, and other wordy things. I offer print design services as well as part-time social media management and copywriting for small businesses. My rates are as follows*:
Copy Editing and Line Editing:
Proofreading = $0.02 cents per word
Copy Editing = $0.03 per page/with fact-checking $0.04 per page
Line Editing/Structural Editing = $0.05 per page
Graphic Design Projects:
Fees are on a per-project basis, and we can discuss the best price for your needs.
*I require that projects be paid 50 percent in advance and 50 percent upon completion of work via check, PayPal, Chase QuickPay, Venmo and Circle. When the work is done, I will send you an invoice marked “paid in full.” I must confirm payment has been received before editing can begin—please don’t be offended. Submit your manuscript via email attachment as Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx only). Double spaced, please. Projects over 50,000 words require no fewer than four weeks to complete.
